Australian National Herbarium
(ANH)

Centre for Plant Biodiversity Research
(Herbarium CANB)
CSIRO Plant Industry / Australian National Botanic Gardens

The Australian National Herbarium, with approximately 1 million preserved plant specimens, is one of the three largest plant collections in Australia. It is unique among the Australian Herbaria in having a national focus for its collections, acquisition and research programs.

The ANH has a tropical forest annexe in Atherton, Queensland, of c. 100,000 tropical rain forest Australian species. The main collections in Canberra are associated with living collections of the Australian National Botanic Gardens, a vouchered living resource of approximately one third of the Australian native flora. The ANH’s herbarium collections are also linked to the slides and database of the Australian National Plant Photograph Index (c. 22,000 images).

In addition to the facilities of the working research and voucher collection, the Centre has access to controlled glasshouse and state of the art morphological, anatomical, genetic and molecular systematic biological laboratory facilities. The ANH has access to two libraries with among the best collections of botanical literature in Australia.

The ANH’s specimen data and associated nomenclature and bibliographic data are stored on a sophisticated integrated database available to staff and visitors. Views of these data are also available to members of the public through gateways to the internet. Current development projects include on-line collaborative custodianship and management of these databases with national and international institutions.

Collections particularly well represented and curated include the Myrtaceae, Orchidaceae, Proteaceae, Loranthaceae, Malvaceae, Asteraceae, Rutaceae, Amaranthaceae, Sapindaceae, the Legumes, Poaceae and a number of smaller angiosperm families and the cryptogamic groups (especially the Mosses and Lichens). Regionally, PNG is very well represented in the collections.

Donations to the plant collection and supporting library collections can be made under the Cultural Bequests Program.
