CSIRO Sustainable Ecosystems

The ANWC, with over 80 thousand specimens, holds CSIRO’s land vertebrate collections, including the most comprehensively documented collections of Australian-New Guinean birds in the world. The collections are curated to the highest standards in modern, air-conditioned facilities, and are comprehensively databased. Facilities for users, both staff and visitors, have been designed for both convenience and care of the collections.

Although traditionally focussed on morphological research, the ANWC has recently begun a program of genetic studies, drawing on its unsurpassed tissue collection of Australian birds. Morphological studies continue as well, with the second volume of the comprehensive Directory of Australian Birds currently in preparation.

The focus of ANWC research is on the diversity of the Australian bird fauna continent-wide, although the Collection holds extensive regional collections of mammals as well. All collections are under the joint care of a Curator and two collection officers. The ANWC accepts collections from private individuals and institutions. Donations can be made under the Cultural Bequests Program.
