Other CSIRO CollectionsThere are other collections of flora and fauna in CSIRO developed for various research and related purposes. The more significant include: Australian Tree Seed CentreThe Australian Tree Seed Centre (ATSC) is the central contact point for seed and information about the woody component of Australia’s floral diversity. It has been Australia’s national tree seed bank for over 35 years, and is one of the world’s largest publicly accessible collections of forest germplasm. The Centre holds more than 30,000 accessions from 1300 species of woody plants – predominantly Australian but including material from PNG, Indonesia and several other countries. Some seedlots are supported by field plantings (provenance resource stands) for conservation and genetic access purposes. Each year ATSC responds to 3000 requests for seed and information and despatches around 8000 germplasm samples to researchers in more than 100 countries as well as the general public. The collection has a focus on the biodiversity of Australian microalgae: most of the strains have been isolated from Australian waters, from the tropics to polar waters, and from localities ranging from open ocean, coastal, intertidal, estuarine and a variety of freshwater habitats. It is one of the major microalgal culture collections worldwide and one of only several in the Australasian region. The collection is pivotal to microalgal research for aquaculture, biotechnology and environmental issues.
Susan BlackburnTel: (03) 6232 5307 Postal address: Street address: Wood inhabiting fungi collectionContains over 3500 live cultures from more than 600 species and about 5000 herbarium specimens from over 1000 species (200+ genera). The collection is a working reference collection providing a service for the identification of wood inhabiting and decaying fungi. Contact: Gary JohnsonTel: (03) 9545 2604 Postal address: Street address: Dadswell Memorial Wood CollectionContains over 45,000 samples representing 10,000 species, 2200 genera and 240 botanical families. Approximately fifty percent of the wood specimens have been sectioned and slides prepared. Contact: Jugo IlicTel: (03) 9545 2127 Postal address: Street address: CSIRO Mycology Herbarium, PerthContains Australian macrofungi, primarily mycorrhizal taxa, and has Australia-wide scope built up by field collecting in forests and woodlands throughout most regions since the early 1980s. The collection is structured into (1) herbarium of approx. 10,000 collections, (2) culture collection of approx. 800 living pure isolates, and (3) photographic collection of approx. 10,000 slides; significant parts of the collections are databased. The primary research applications are as a genetic resource and reference basis for CSIRO research on nutrient cycling (mycorrhizal and decomposer) fungi in Australian forests, woodlands and plantations, systematic studies and industry applications such as revegetation and restoration of forest/woodlands.
