PhD network

Every PhD student at CSIRO Plant Industry is added to the PhD email list, PIPhDs@csiro.au, where CSIRO Plant Industry PhD students may post messages to other PhD students.

These email addresses are to help students communicate effectively with each other, exchange ideas and suggestions and to discuss issues and ways of dealing with them. If you are a PhD student and not on these lists and would like to be please contact Sophie Clayton on sophie.clayton@csiro.au.

PhD peer support program

CSIRO Plant Industry runs a peer support program for all new staff including PhD students. This program will match new PhD students with a Peer Support Officer (normally another student) who has been at CSIRO Plant Industry for some time to:

  • Provide the PhD student with a point of contact for general queries regarding day-to-day operational issues (such as the location of facilities, 'how we do things around here' and relevant CSIRO Plant Industry policies) and introduce them to their work colleagues;
  • Help the new PhD student integrate with CSIRO Plant Industry by providing access to someone who is familiar with our culture, attitude and expectations; and
  • Where required, offer advice on a range of issues prior to commencement, such as schools, real estate, public transport etc.

The Peer Support Officer will make contact with their allocated new PhD student in the first instance via phone or email on or before commencement. On commencement the Peer Support Officer will assist the new PhD student to settle in to their role as outlined above and meet with them on a regular basis over the following months, and then on an 'as needs' basis once the new PhD student begins to feel more familiar with their role and surroundings.

For more information on CSIRO Plant Industry's peer support program please visit http://intranet.pi.csiro.au/hr/peersupport.htm (staff only).
